Living Lab Automated Transport Zeeland

In collaboration with Zeeland Connekt and the Province of Zeeland, research has been done into the implementation of a living lab.

In a field lab (or living lab) the innovation (where necessary within an exemption) is tested under real conditions. This means that companies, governments and knowledge institutions come together to test a solution ‘in real life’ by means of an innovative method within a certain problem. In the case of the Living Lab Automated Transport Zeeland, we are testing forms of smart logistics in a lifelike use case, namely the North Sea Port in Vlissingen. The aim of the living lab is to offer an independent and open platform for testing autonomous transport. Anyone who comes with people, resources and a research question that is complementary in terms of content can, in principle, make use of the facilities offered – for a fee.

What we do

In collaboration with Zeeland Connekt and the Province of Zeeland, research has been done into the implementation of the above living lab. Based on an in-depth insight, we spoke with the client, stakeholders and suppliers of technology and based on the similarities in this process, a living lab was created.

Within this process we were responsible for deepening our insight, organising and conducting discussions, concretising pickups, drawing up a plan of approach and plan of requirements, determining possible use cases and identifying funding possibilities.

Why we do it

In a field lab, the innovation (where necessary within an exemption) is tested under real conditions. This means that companies, governments and knowledge institutions come together to test a solution to a particular problem in real life using an innovative method. Within a field lab, it is important to design the application in such a way that a project demonstrates that it can function in the market by linking it to a use case or problem owner.

Result

The result of our approach is that a Living Lab Automated Transport Zeeland will now actually be organised, with all stakeholders involved on board. In the Living Lab Automated Transport Zeeland, the business community and educational institutions in Zeeland are building up the necessary and specific knowledge to solve personnel shortages, the impact of autonomous transport on the logistics chain and the training of young talent who will be working with this new technology.
